Nainital Winter Carnival commenced with the China Peak trekking event on Monday. To mark the inauguration of the carnival, the District Tourism Development Department organized a trek from Tanki Band to China Peak, in which more than 30 youths participated. The trekking expedition was flagged off by MLA Sarita Arya and Additional District Magistrate Vivek Roy. During the trek, participants were also sensitized to bird watching and environmental awareness activities.

District Tourism Development Officer Atul Bhandari said that a cleanliness drive was conducted along with the trekking and bird watching program. Bird watching expert Jagjeevan Dhami briefed the participants about the Naina Bird Sanctuary and the migratory birds that arrive in the region during the winter season.

ADM Vivek Roy said that the tourism department has planned two trekking events under the Winter Carnival—a short trek to China Peak and a longer trek from Birla Chungi to Kainchi Dham scheduled for December 26. He added that the China Peak trek served as a preparatory activity for the longer trek, and enthusiastic participation by local youth reflects growing interest in adventure tourism.

Officials noted that the Winter Carnival, which started on a modest scale in Nainital, has now evolved into a major tourism event. This year, a grand celebration is being organized to attract tourists and promote local culture. Atul Bhandari also announced that the volunteer who collects the maximum garbage during the cleanliness drive will be specially honored.

The grand Winter Carnival was officially launched on Mall Road with colorful cultural performances, including Jalsa, Lakhiya Bhoot and Chholiya dance, drawing large crowds of locals and tourists. A star night event is scheduled for the evening, adding further excitement to the festivities.

SDM Nawazish Khaliq, EO Rohitash Sharma, PC Manral, Dayakishan Pokhriya, Nitin Karki, Pankaj Bhatt, Deepak Martolia and other officials and dignitaries were present during the event.
