The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) has inaugurated the 12th Scientific Assembly of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) on Monday. It brings together leading scientists, researchers, and policymakers from across the globe. The week-long international event aims to foster dialogue on sustainable water resource management, hydrological innovations, and resilience to climate change.
With over 627 participants from 49 countries and 682 scientific contributions, this edition marks one of the largest gatherings in IAHS history. The assembly will feature a series of technical sessions, workshops, and collaborative forums to promote global partnerships in water sustainability and climate adaptation.
Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand, Shri Anand Bardhan, inaugurated the session as the chief guest. He lauded IIT Roorkee and IAHS for their contributions to advancing hydrological research and applying scientific knowledge to real-world challenges. “Hydroscience is critical to climate change resilience, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development. Institutions like IIT Roorkee play a vital role in connecting global knowledge with local solutions that empower both communities and policymakers,” he said.
The ceremony began with the traditional lamp lighting and the IIT Roorkee Kulgeet, followed by addresses from key dignitaries including Prof. K.K. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee; Prof. Salvatore Grimaldi, President, IAHS; Dr. V.M. Tiwari, Vice President, INSA and Director, CSIR-NEIST; Prof. Sumit Sen, Chair, IAHS SA 2025; and Prof. Ankit Agarwal, Convener.
Highlighting India’s growing leadership in hydrological research and sustainable water management, Prof. K.K. Pant said, “I am confident that this six-day gathering will inspire new ideas, long-term partnerships, and transformative innovations that will make meaningful contributions to both water science and society.”
