Subedar Sunil Singh Negi, a proud son of Chamiyala village in Tehri Garhwal district, has etched his name in history by successfully summiting Mount Everest (8,848.86 meters) on May 27, 2025, as part of the Indian Army’s prestigious Silver Jubilee Mount Everest Expedition. This achievement not only brings immense pride to Uttarakhand but also adds a glorious chapter to India’s mountaineering history.
The expedition, flagged off by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on April 3, 2025, included 32 Indian Army personnel. The team departed for Nepal on April 12. Out of these, 22 climbers were selected for the final summit push, and all reached the peak together—setting a world record for the highest number of climbers from a single team to conquer Everest simultaneously.
Currently posted in the 6th Garhwal Rifles, Subedar Negi joined the Indian Army in 2001. A passionate mountaineer, he underwent six months of specialized training at the High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, in 2004. Since then, he has scaled several challenging peaks above 7,000 meters, including Mount Nun, Mount Apshara, Mount Kangju Kangri, and Mount Mukut (East).
Although now residing in Sunlight Enclave near DSP Chowk in Barowala, Dehradun, his roots remain firmly planted in his native village Chamiyala. His incredible feat has inspired waves of admiration and pride across the state. Locals, family members, and youth across Uttarakhand have hailed Subedar Negi’s courage and determination, calling him a role model for aspiring adventurers.
His success stands as a testament to the bravery and excellence of Uttarakhand’s youth and their invaluable contribution to the Indian Army.
