A new chapter has been added to the history of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly. During the budget session of the Fifth Assembly on February 21, 2025, Speaker Ritu Khanduri Bhushan set an unprecedented record by conducting the House proceedings continuously for 11 hours 51 minutes—the longest session ever held without taking even a single break. This remarkable feat not only broke her previous record but also surpassed all earlier sessions in the Assembly’s history.
Historically, long sessions have been a feature of the Uttarakhand Legislature. On February 28, 2024, during the Fifth Assembly, Speaker Bhushan conducted a session lasting 11 hours 20 minutes. In contrast, the Fourth Assembly witnessed a 4-hour 40-minute session on June 15, 2017, presided over by Premchand Aggarwal, while Deputy Speaker Raghunath Singh Chauhan led a 6-hour 45-minute session. Moreover, the First Assembly on June 11, 2002, recorded an 11-hour 11-minute session under the stewardship of Yashpal Arya. However, the record-breaking session on February 21, 2025, has firmly etched its place in history.
The Speaker’s leadership during this historic day was marked by her exceptional dedication and discipline. Unlike typical sessions where Members step out intermittently for rest, Speaker Bhushan conducted the second session continuously for 8 hours 47 minutes without pause. Since assuming office in 2022, she has maintained an unbroken record of not taking any breaks during proceedings, symbolizing her unwavering commitment.
