The Jhanda Mela is scheduled to commence in the state capital on Saturday. Thousands of sangats, or groups of devotees, from various regions across the country arriving a day ahead of the flag hoisting ceremony, have gathered here as per tradition.
This fair holds significant historical importance. It is closely linked with the establishment of Dehradun. In 1676, Guru Ram Rai established his shelter, Deradeen, now known as Dehradun, after being impressed by the valley’s tranquility and beauty. He initiated the tradition of hoisting a flag in the middle of the Doon valley, marking the beginning of the holy flagpole tradition.
Organizers at Guru Ram Rai Darbar, the venue of the mela, have noted a continuous flow of pilgrims arriving throughout the week to participate in the event.
A unique aspect of this tradition is that devotees from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar refrain from attending the flag-hoisting ceremony. Bhupender Raturi, spokesperson for Guru Ram Rai Darbar, explained, “Those from the east do not witness the flag being hoisted and usually depart on Friday. They may return once the flag is raised.”
