Former Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Narayan Datt Tiwari breathed last at Max Hospital in Saket today. Tiwari, 93 was bed ridden for more than 12 months suffering brain hemorrhage and kidney failure. ND Tiwari was one of the most prominent leaders of congress holding many important portfolio’s throughout his career. He remains as the only Chief Minister of Uttarakhand to have completed his 5 year tenure in office.
Born on October 18, 1925 ND Tiwari was a freedom fighter before joining the Congress and became the Minister of External Affairs in the Rajiv Gandhi cabinet. He remains the only politician to be elected Chief Minister in two Indian states. He served as the CM of UP 3 times. He was a contender to be Prime Minister of India in the early 1990s but was pipped to the post by P. V. Narasimha Rao. One of the key reasons was that he lost the Lok Sabha elections by a mere 800 votes earlier.
