Teacher’s day is a day to honour the teachers who contribute the maximum to the students’ overall development. Every year, we celebrate Teachers’ Day on September 5, which is marked by the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was a teacher par excellence. When he became the President of India in 1962, he was requested by his students and friends that they get his permission to celebrate his birthday on September 5. After hearing the request, he politely replied, “Instead of celebrating my personal birthday, it would be better if it is dedicated to the entire teaching profession.”
The teaching profession has a great impact on the overall growth, development and well-being of the students, society and the country. A teacher is a beacon in the darkness and a hope that gives the students courage and strength to lead their life. Students can never repay the valuable contribution of their teachers who arouse their hearts with the light of knowledge by removing all sorts of ignorance.
Keeping the importance of teacher-student relationship in mind, Professor Tariq Mansoor, a teacher and the Vice Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University had said: “Teachers are the backbone of any academic institution and always play a big role in shaping the life and career of students”.
A teacher is strict with his/her students at times but that does not mean that s/he dislikes them. S/he rebukes his/her students to prepare them for greater challenges and to nurture their learning skill to build a strong foundation for the next phase of their life. Under the guidance and supervision of a teacher, students attained an impressive milestone in their life with integrity and honesty.
One of the research scholars, Mohammad Tahir, with Language of Advertising, Media and Market (LAMM) at the Aligarh Muslim University said: “Whatsoever I have learned in my life, I have learned it from my teachers. My teachers are more like friends and mentors who provided me with life-changing advice which helps me grow a bit every day.”
Teachers’ Day must be celebrated with lots of excitement, joy and happiness and students must tell their teachers how and why are they special to them. This is the day when students should recognise and honour their teachers who have given impeccable contribution in shaping their future. Teachers are not only the backbone of our society but also act as a change agent — they shape and develop a student’s personality and make him/her an ideal citizen of the country and a responsible member of society.
Another student, Firdaus Qamar, wearing a scarf on her head, expressed her feeling by saying that it was her teachers who guided, helped and imbibed strong values in her to make her what she was at present. They had not only helped in increasing her knowledge but also helped her understand the core values of humanism.
As we know teaching is a noble profession and teachers are the source of knowledge and wisdom. There is a saying that teachers are greater than the parents. Parents give birth to a child whereas teachers mould that child’s personality and provide a brighter future. Apart from academics, teachers always stand by their students at every step to guide, motivate and inspire them to become a better person in society and also succeed in their career.
On the importance of this day, Syed Talha Ali, who recently graduated from the Aligarh Muslim University said: “My teachers have helped me in boosting my spirits when I was dejected and depressed. I thank all my teachers who have taught me to strive for excellence and become a better version of myself.”
Teachers act as role models and always play a prominent role in influencing and inspiring their students. In our society, parents are responsible for giving their children quality care, however, teachers are responsible for making their future bright and successful. Teachers are the source of inspiration to the students which help them to go ahead and be successful. Teachers make students very strong and prepare them to face the many challenges they can face in their life with confidence and commitment.
Habibur Rahman, a student pursuing his PhD in the Department of Linguistics at Aligarh Muslim University expressed his feeling with much excitement. He said, “They have always shown me the right way to deal with situations and overcome my shortcomings. It is because of the advice of my teachers that I am able to concentrate on myself and am constantly trying to follow the path of goodness and righteousness.”
Nothing could be learned without the help of a teacher — be it painting, lab experiments or learning a new language, it is a teacher who guides a student on how to acquire particular traits to excel in any specialised or technical field.
Teachers’ Day is a wonderful opportunity for all students to appreciate the hard work and efforts of the teachers in grooming and shaping the lives of his/her students in a meaningful way. The most difficult and challenging part for a teacher is to balance the class where students come from different economic, social, religious, linguistic and cultural background.
On this very special day, to honour the teachers, students should and must offer flowers, greeting cards and gifts to express their affection, love and respect towards them. Celebration of Teachers’ Day is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to recall our childhood days and cherish those school or college memories, crushed under our daily chores.
