Governor Dr KK Paul inaugurated the Dehradun Literature Festival at Unison World School today.
In his address, he said that translations from English into Hindi and regional languages must be enhanced. And also vice-versa. Through translations, great works can reach a very large number of readers. Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali could receive worldwide recognition after being translated into English. He said that if Premchand’s works could be translated into English and other languages, they would reach readers all over the world.
Writers and publishers should give more attention to children’s books. The reading habit was being reduced among children due to internet and electronic gadgets.
If interesting books were brought out, they could lure children. The Governor said that the natural splendour of Urttarakhand must be projected to the world through television and cinema.
He said the Dehradun Literature Festival was a good initiative. Dehradun had always been a favourite place of many writers. He spoke about Gaura Pant Shivani, Shekhar Joshi, Shailesh Matiyani, Ruskin Bond, Allan Sealy and the great poet,Sumitranandan Pant .
The Governor said that the role of writers was important in this era of social, cultural and economic changes. They preserve the cultural heritage and social values by their writing.
In the inaugural session were present Sadhguru of Isha Foundation, Ruskin Bond and many well-known writers and eminent persons. The Governor had a meeting with Sadhguru on the occasion.
The festival will conclude on Friday.
