Legendary folk singer of Uttarakhand Kabutari Devi died at a government hospital in Pithoragarh on Saturday morning. Local people are saying that if she would have been ferried to Dehradun by air ambulance then she might have been alive now but she did not get that facility.
President Medal awardee Kabutari Devi came from the remote area of Pithoragarh and gave a new identity to the hill culture and folk songs of Uttarakhand.
Expressing condolence over her death, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said the death of Kabutari Devi was an irreparable loss to the hill folk culture. Her contribution would always be remembered.
She began her association with the Uttarayani programme of Akashvani in the seventies. She sang songs that she had heard from her mother and grandmother in her childhood.
She had started her career in Akashvani, when no female artiste was singing for it. In the 70s, she reached the studio of the hill village for the first time and made a mark in the radio world. She sang more than 100 songs for Akashvani.
