Graphic Era University BTech student drowns in Rishikesh; search operation on

A 21-year-old BTech student of Graphic Era Institute, Dehradun, drowned in the Ganga river at Shivpuri in Rishikesh on Tuesday. Rahul Anthwal and seven of his friends had come to Rishikesh to celebrate birthday of a friend on the banks of the river, said police. Divers had to stop the search operation in the evening due to bad weather, said police, adding that they would resume the search on Wednesday morning.
The victim was a resident of Rudrapryag district and was a fourth year BTech student at the Dehradun-based institute.

Manish Upadhyay, SHO of Muniki Reti police station said, “Rahul and his friends were celebrating birthday of a friend near Shivpuri on the bank of the Ganga. They jumped into the river for a swim but Rahul got drowned in deep water and was swept away. His friends tried to save Rahul but in vain. After getting information, we rushed to the spot and divers were pressed into service to fish out the body. Police had to stop the search operation in the evening due to bad weather. The search operation will be resumed early on Wednesday morning. We have informed his parents.”
