Uttarakhand Governor Dr.K.K.Paul today inaugurated the first international conference on Green Chemistry/ Engineering and Technologies for Sustainable Development (GCET-2017) at Panjab University, Chandigarh .
Addressing the conference as the chief guest, he said that it was a matter of pride for the entire country that the conference, organized jointly by Panjab University and Florida Polytechnic University (USA) , was being held at Panjab University.
He expressed happiness at the fact that the UGC had awarded the Panjab University and Florida Polytechnic University a prestigious collaborative project under “Indo-US 21st Century Knowledge Initiative” which is aimed at developing Green Chemistry/Engineering and Technologies – Education, Research and Outreach for Sustainable Development.
The Governor said the conference will primarily have to address the global challenges being faced by the scientific community the world over ,with ever increasing industrialization ,in containing the volatile organic and synthetic pollutants.” Among many challenges , maintaining and improving the quality of air and water is the most alarming challenge facing the 21st global society,” he said.
He said the implementation of “Green Chemistry and Engineering Principles,” and the development of “Green technologies” were paramount to the endeavour to ensure sustainable development of the human race “Chemistry is involved in every aspect of our life. I greatly appreciate this venture of the organizers to bring eminent scientists, technologists and experts from all over the world to explore the interdisciplinary aspects of green Chemistry to tackle major environmental problems.”
The Governor said the recent concern at the 2015 Paris Climate Conference (COP21) about climate change and subsequent emphasis on developing green technologies and implementing green chemistry/engineering principles inevitably demonstrates the urgent need for collaborative initiatives on research, education and outreach activities between developed and developing nations. He expressed the hope that that this conference would be able to create and provide a genuine platform for fruitful discussion on innovative methods and novel technologies in the frontier areas of Chemistry that may benefit our society at large.
He said Panjab University had earned a respected place in academics and research both at the national and international level. “The integrated effort of Panjab University with Florida Polytechnic University, (USA) deserves great appreciation. I am sure that this effort of Panjab University with a US Institution will have a long term impact on the enhancement of scientific infrastructure in the region.”
The Governor said distinguished scientists from India and USA will participate in the deliberations to address global challenges in the field of GCET .”This will facilitate exchange of expertise research, resources and outreach activities between the two countries.”
