Congress heavyweights like Yashpal Arya and Dr Shailendra Mohan Singhal, who had saved the congress fortress during general election-2012 because BJP had won seven out of nine assembly seats of Udhamsinghnagar district, have left congress and sailing in BJP boat. Later in the year 2012 then Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna had poached BJP MLA Kiran Mandal, who had won from Sitarganj, and he resigned from Vidhan Sabha and later CM won the seat in assembly bypoll. With this election congress, which had won mere two seats during assembly election-2012 has risen upto three out of nine seats of the district.
At present the district’s all nine seats are being represented by BJP MLAs including three dissidents i.e. Dr Singhal, Arya and Ex CM Bahuguna. Although Ex CM Bahuguna is in election fray from Sitarganj indirectly because his youngest son Saurabh Bahuguna’s first debut in politics from here. Understanding this tricks CM Harish Rawat has been challenging BJP in the district which all nine seats are being represented by sitting BJP including dissidents. With this decision he has created flutter in power corridor from Dehradun to Delhi and has forced political analyst to do anticipation on the seat. Not only he himself in election fray but also made election tough by distributing ticket to winnablity criteria only. For this he has also made compromise with the person, who had announced award that whosoever will bring RaGa head, and given ticket to his wife Sunita Bajwa from Bajpur against giant leader & Ex PCC president Yashpal Arya.
With this decision he has surprised the BJP and their sitting MLAs, who were dreaming to get walk over after departure of dissidents including Arya, and now they are busy in using all permutation and combination. Even Udhamsinghnagar MP and Ex CM Bhagat Singh Koshyari, who had managed to bring huge crowd in BJP national president Amit Shah rally during one month long parivartan rally at his Parliamentary constituency, has confined himself in this constituency. Although he is being considered as lone Kumaon leader in BJP, who has travelled each village of the region on his foot, but seems under stress because party high command has categorically asked that whosoever will win more and more number of seats in his lok Sabha constituency will be considered as heavyweight.
Arya, who had joined BJP with a condition that if party gives ticket to his son Sanjeev Arya, is under stress because of Sunita Bajwa. Coincidentally both he and his son contesting election against women, who is having dominance over male voters in Uttarakhand because of migration, from Bazpur and Nainital reserved seats of state, this time. With Arya’s departure from congress, ruling party which was suppose to face anti incumbency due to their minister, congress party has become vocal and saying that now tainted leaders have joined BJP so he would give more transparent and stable government if they would be voted in power.
