Personnel of the City Patrol Unit (CPU) which has elicited both praise and censure since its establishment will have their performance evaluated. PHQ SSP Nivedita Kukreti said that police chiefs of the districts where the unit has been working have been asked to submit reports on its performance. The CPU personnel whose performance would be found below par would be sent back to their earlier postings.
CPU was formed in Dehradun in April, 2014. The unit was extended later to Haridwar, Rudrapur, Roorkee and Haldwani as the works of the unit in stopping traffic rule violations won accolades from some quarters. However, at the same time, it has been facing flak for allegedly being more engaged in slapping challans than in performing duties they are tasked with.
Notably, CPU was conceived as a force which would strictly enforce the traffic rules on the roads while stopping reckless and drunk driving and forcing the riders of the two-wheelers to wear the helmets. Besides, the unit is tasked to stop illegal mining and sale of illicit liquor in areas they are deployed in.
