Around two years back, Dr.Krishna.Kant.Paul took charge as the Governor of Uttarakhand .It has been a fruitful journey since then as he has taken great care of ensuring development of the state on various fronts and suggesting new possibilities to be explored to strengthen the hill state.
Dr.Paul brought here with him a vast experience of public service, a quiet discipline ,resolute decisiveness , great organisational ability and a dedication to work which has led to progress in spheres like higher education, tourism, floriculture, horticulture and cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants .
during interaction with media at Raj Bhawan , the governor spoke about his vision regarding the state that has great potential in many spheres. “Uttarakhand is a very progressive state with immense possibilities and potential for growth.It is surrounded by developed areas and this increases its potential”, the governor said.
Dr.Paul’s concern about the standards of higher education are known well by now. He has been making tireless efforts since his arrival in the state to create awareness of the need to enhance the level of higher education in Uttarakhand. He initiated he Toppers’ Conclave at Raj Bhawan for university toppers , Governor’s Teachers and Students awards for government schools,and awards for best researchers in universities . It was due to his efforts that regular convocations started being held in state universities. Universities have begun moving towards smart campuses and have adopted villages to help develop them. The governor has been stressing the need for raising the overall level of research in universities of Uttarakhand .
Dr.Paul visited the remote, border areas of the state like Munsiyari, Ghansali and Malari and looking at the problems of the people there , he suggested to the government that powerlooms should be provided to all people ,including tribals, who work at handlooms .”The products will get a better finish with powerlooms. Also, marketing facilities are needed greatly there to promote these products of border areas,” said the governor.
He said the state had immense potential in horticulture and floriculture . He said that exotic flowers like tulips had been grown at Raj Bhawan and these had given a new dimension to the annual Spring Festival ( Vasantotsav) held every year at Raj Bhawan.
The governor said that flowers from Uttarakhand could find a ready market in New Delhi . “If the flowers from Uttarakhand can be taken from here in the evening , they can reach this market in time , “ said the governor. “Flower growers need to have proper tie-ups and transportation.”
The governor has been taking keen interest in the medicinal and aromatic plants .He visited the Herbal Research and Development Institute, Mandal (Gopeshwar) and also the Centre for Aromatic Plants, Selaqui.He has suggested that centres like these be set up in other parts of the state.
The governor has addressed many seminars over two years about food processing .He has highlighted the need for food processing units in the state to ensure that the fruits grown in the state are utililsed.
As far as tourism is concerned, Dr.Paul has made several efforts to highlight the need for exploiting the vast potential the state has in this sphere.In Nainital, golf and yachting events have been regularly held (Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament , Governor’s Cup sailing Regatta and Governor’s Cup Inter School Golf Tournament) .”Free of cost training in golf is being given to school students at the Golf Club, Raj Bhawan, Nainital, “ said the governor. A film on Raj Bhawan, Nainital was recently made on the governor’s initiative. Tiled “Raj Bhawan, Nainital : A Legacy of Excellence”, the film has been made by Rudy Singh, an independent film maker.
The governor’s personal interest in the film gave it final touches and enabled it to express fully the restoration and renovation of this heritage building . Each minute detail of the restoration has been narrated in the twenty minute long film .The imposing chandeliers , the wall papers, the roofs, the stones and the furniture have been restored and replaced carefully without taking away from the original look of the imposing edifice.
The governor said that work is being done on the Tehri Reservoir (lake) about which he had made suggestions in 2015. “The Jageshwar temple complex is a beautiful heritage we have and it should be publicized more and in a better manner to attract visitors ,” said Dr.Paul. “Also, we must look at creating a Vivekananda Tourist Circuit covering the various sites in this region which were visited by the Swami.”
The governor has been addressing various forums, organizations and institutions over the past two years to catalyse the intellectual though process and activity in the state , encourage research and innovation and nurture creative efforts .
