Special attention needed to reduce dependence on energy

Former Atomic Energy Commission chairman and renowned nuclear scientist Dr.Anil Kakodkar said here today that keeping in mind the growing energy needs of India,  special attention must  be given to techniques developed in the country so that dependence on importing energy is reduced. In these techniques, solar energy, atomic energy and biomass can prove important.

Dr.Kakodkar was delivering his lecture on India’s energy needs and the role of atomic energy at Raj Bhawan on the occasion of National Science Day.

 The lecture series was begun  on the initiative of Governor Dr KK Paul last year. The first lecture was delivered last year by renowned scientist  Dr RA Mashelkar. Dr Kakodkar delivered his lecture this morning at Raj Bhawan auditorium where a large number of scientists, teachers, students and intellectuals were present. Dr Kakodkar spoke about the strategy required for fulfilling the energy needs of the country by using our limited resources. He said a balance would have to be found between the needs and sustainability.

He said that  solar energy, atomic energy and biomass were important in the context of India. These can be converted and utilized for electricity and fuel needs . Hydrogen can be obtained from atomic energy and fuel can be obtained by a combination of hydrogen and biomass.

Dr.Kakodkar said that India had begun its atomic energy programme with creative objectives. Atomic energy is as safe as any other energy .In the Indian Constitution, developing a scientific temper is part of the fundamental duties of the people .He said that the perspective towards atomic energy needed to be changed. India is capable of utilizing atomic energy in a safe manner.

He said that energy utilization had a direct relationship with the quality of life. Thus, energy resources need to be developed on a long-term basis.

Earlier, Governor Dr Paul welcomed Dr Kakodkar and introduced him to the audience .He said it was a matter of pride for all  to listen to him. His contribution to the country’s nuclear programmes  has been  significant .Padmashri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan Dr.Kakodkar has served as the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission  and secretary (Atomic energy department), Government of India. Dr.Rajendra Dobhal, DG of UCOST, delivered the vote of thanks. Dr Kakodkar and the Governor went around the Science Model  gallery put up on the occasion. Present on the occasion were additional chief secretary Dr.Ranvir Singh, secretary Ravi Nath Raman, VCs of state universities, teachers, scientists and students.
