In another embarrassment for police coming close on the heels of the custodial death of a minor boy at Kashipur in Udham Singh Nagar district, an abduction and rape accused lodged in Haldwani jail died after he leaped from the four floor of Sushila Tiwari Hospital in a bid to escape with police in the chase on Monday. Police said that the accused had been admitted to the hospital after he was afflicted with an epileptic attack. “The two policemen present there on duty to keep eyes on him chased him while he broke the handcuffs and tried to run away. His sister who came to visit him also ran and leaped. She had one of her limbs fractured,” said a police officer. Notably, Kashipur native Akil, 22, was arrested by Ramnagar police on October 2016 on the charge of kidnapping and raping a minor. He was sent to Haldwani jail on October 10, last year.
Admitted at the base hospital on February 28, he was later referred to Sushila Tiwari Hospital on March 2. He was admitted at D ward on the four floor of the government-run facility, hospital sources said. Two constables deputed for him, Akil somehow loosened the handcuffs on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. As the constables chased him he took a leap from the four floor of the facility and dashed against the ground, resulting in his instant death. Nanital SSP Janmejay Khanduri said that they were investigating the case.
