University of Petroleum & Energy Studies (UPES) and Software Technology Park of India (STPI), Dehradun joined hands towards promoting awareness of Financial Literacy amongst the villagers of 9 villages which are in the vicinity of UPES campuses at Bidholi & Kandoli. 30 UPES student volunteers assisted by 12 faculty members and 6 STPI, Dehradun officials formed 6 teams and spread themselves across nine villages over two days. The teams stalked the villages of Upper Kandoli, Lower Kandoli, Bidholi, Saila, Kharakhet, Pondha, Than Gaon, Bairapur & Patti Misraj with their Charts and visual aids and shared with the villagers in detail the usage of mobile applications “SBI Buddy” & “BHIM” for smart phone owners and the non-smart phone users were taught how to use the “*99#” USSD Code for transferring money from one account to another. The students also gave a hands on experience to over 500 villagers by actually transferring small denominations of Re 1/- & Re 2/- between their respective accounts through their mobiles. This initiative was led by Dr Hanumant Sastry G from ‘Centre of Information Technology’ in UPES and Maneesh Kumar, Deputy Director, STPI, Dehradun.
Arun Dhand, Director – media Affairs informed that this exercise has been carried out as per the directions of UGC in the month of December wherein all Universities & Colleges were asked to motivate students to support the HRD Ministers initiative of “Vittiya Saksharta Abhiyaan” (VISAKA). The HRD minister Mr Prakash Javdekar had appealed to the student community to voluntarily contribute in the VISAKA campaign by reaching out to semi-educated and uneducated rural folks of India living in their respective vicinity and remove their apprehensions and fears of Digital transactions.
