6 held with 300 cartons of illegal liqour

In a major seizure, Dehradun police recovered 300 cartons of illicit liquor on Friday and arrested six bootleggers. Police also recovered a country-made pistol, four live cartridges and a machete from the accused.

The illicit liquor was being smuggled via Haryana into the hill state in a truck and a car. Acting on a tip-off, police in Premnagar put up a barrier at Jhajra police post and intensified checking of vehicles to stop any attempt to smuggle illicit liquor into Dehradun.

According to Nivedita Kukreti, senior superintendent of police (Dehradun), “A white car and a truck following it were stopped for checking by the police team. Over 285 cartons were recovered from the truck while 15 cartons of illicit liquor were found in the car. The haul was being smuggled from Haryana.”

The accused have been identified as Praveen Kumar, Bhushan, Amit Chikara, Jagjit Singh, Naresh Kumar and Sandeep Singh. While Chikara is from Meerut, all other accused are from Haryana. Police said that 36-year-old Praveen Kumar was the kingpin of the gang and was in jail earlier on charges of liquor smuggling. Police have booked all six under section 60 of the Excise Act and Arms act.
