The 38th National Games in Uttarakhand is proving to be a landmark event, not just for the athletic performances but also for the state’s commitment to sustainability and cultural heritage. The state’s innovative implementation of the Green Games theme has received widespread praise, including accolades from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Monal, Uttarakhand’s state bird, has been chosen as the event mascot, symbolizing environmental conservation. Medals for winners are crafted from e-waste, while discarded sports equipment has been repurposed into creative sculptures, including a massive tiger made from e-waste. Additionally, a “Sports Forest (Khel Van)” is being established to honor athletes, featuring 1,600 Rudraksha trees on a 2.77-hectare plot.

Sustainability efforts are visible across the event: invitation cards are made from recycled materials, electric rickshaws reduce pollution, solar panels power venues, and reusable water bottles promote eco-consciousness. Bicycles at venues highlight environmental conservation while encouraging fitness.

Uttarakhand has also prioritized women’s health by distributing special welcome kits for female athletes, including sanitary pads and essentials, promoting menstrual health awareness.

In a first, traditional sports like Yoga and Mallakhamb have been included in the medal tally, reflecting Uttarakhand’s spiritual roots. Hosting events in hill towns like Tehri and Almora has showcased the state’s natural beauty and culture. Visitors are treated to traditional pahadi cuisine such as Jhangora and Gahat Dal, and the folk art ‘Aipan’ is prominently featured in event decorations.

With its impressive athletic performances, eco-friendly initiatives, and cultural showcases, Uttarakhand is setting a new standard for the National Games, leaving a lasting impression on both national and global audiences.
