In a significant development for Uttarakhand, the state has received an additional 480 MW of power from the central pool, which will ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during the upcoming winter months. This allocation comes as a major relief, especially as power demand in the state typically outstrips supply in winter due to reduced hydropower generation.
On September 26, 2024, the central government had allocated 300 MW of additional power to the state, valid until March 31, 2025. However, in response to continued requests from the state government, the Union Ministry of Power increased this quota by 180 MW, raising the total to 480 MW. Furthermore, the time period for the additional supply has been extended until June 30, 2025, providing long-term relief to Uttarakhand.
CM Dhami Expresses Gratitude to the Central Government
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Energy Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for their swift action in addressing the state’s power needs. “Thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Energy Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for approving 480 MW additional power to Uttarakhand from the central pool. With this, the people of the state will continue to get uninterrupted electricity even in winter,” said CM Dhami.
The additional power will play a crucial role in mitigating potential shortages caused by the dip in hydropower generation, especially during periods of snowfall in the winter months. Uttarakhand, a state heavily reliant on hydropower, often faces power deficits in winter when river flow reduces, affecting hydroelectric projects.
Long-Term Power Strategy
In addition to securing the immediate power needs, Chief Minister Dhami highlighted that the state is working on a long-term plan to increase power generation. This strategy includes harnessing solar energy, expanding hydroelectric capacity, and exploring coal-based power generation. Uttarakhand aims to reduce its dependency on external power sources and build a more sustainable and reliable energy infrastructure.
During his recent meeting with Union Energy Minister Khattar, CM Dhami had advocated for increasing the state’s power quota, emphasizing the widening gap between electricity demand and supply. His effective negotiations have resulted in this timely power allocation, which is expected to benefit both domestic and commercial consumers in the state.
Relief from Power Crisis
With this additional allocation, Uttarakhand is better equipped to manage its power needs through the harsh winter months, ensuring households and industries alike have access to reliable electricity. This move also alleviates concerns of power shortages that have plagued the state in previous years, particularly during peak demand periods.
The people of Uttarakhand can now look forward to a stable power supply, thanks to this prompt and crucial intervention by the central government.
