Joshimath Tehsil Renamed Jyotirmath, CM Dhami proposal approves by Union Govt

Joshimath tehsil in Chamoli district has officially been renamed Jyotirmath, restoring its ancient name. Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had announced this name change during the Vijay Sankalp Yatra held last year in Ghaat, Chamoli district.

Local residents have long advocated for the restoration of the name Jyotirmath, and this demand was prominently raised with Chief Minister Dhami. Recognizing the cultural and historical significance, CM Dhami committed to addressing their request. Subsequently, a proposal to change the name was prepared and forwarded to the Government of India, which has now given its approval.

The renaming has been warmly welcomed by the local community, who see it as a restoration of their rich heritage. The origins of the name Jyotirmath date back to the 8th century when Adi Guru Shankaracharya is believed to have meditated under the Amar Kalpa tree in this region, receiving divine knowledge. The place was named Jyotirmath in recognition of this divine enlightenment and Jayoteshwar Mahadev, but over time it became known as Joshimath.

Chief Minister Dhami’s decision to rename the tehsil is seen as a respect for public sentiment and a move to honor the area’s historical and spiritual significance. The approval from the Central Government has cemented this change, marking a significant cultural restoration for the region.
