Kuhoo Garg, daughter of former Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar, has cracked the UPSC Civil Service Examination 2023. UPSC has declared final result of CSE 2023 on April 16, 2023.
Kuhoo Garg, a former international badminton player who brought glory to India in various tournaments, has achieved another significant milestone by clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announced the results on Tuesday (April 16), confirming her success. Notably, Kuhoo will follow in the footsteps of her father, Ashok Kumar, who retired as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttarakhand Police last year.

Kuhoo Garg, who chose to play badminton since the age of 9 and began winning medals at the senior national level by the age of 13, faced a pivotal moment during the Uber Cup Trials when she sustained an injury. This injury led her to undergo surgery in Mumbai, prompting her to consider alternative paths during a potential year-long recovery period. It was during this time that she embarked on her UPSC journey, with her first attempt in 2022 after just three months of preparation, ultimately achieving success in 2023.
Her father, Ashok Kumar, a retired IPS officer from the 1989 batch, shared insights into Kuhoo’s transition, stating, “She used to dedicate up to 10 hours a day to badminton practice and suddenly found herself with no outlet due to her injury. That’s when she made the decision to try her hand at the UPSC exams. I supported her throughout her preparations, opting for online coaching.”
In the UPSC Civil Services Exam 2023, Kuhoo Garg, bearing roll number 1420215, secured an impressive 178th rank. This achievement marks her as the first female sportsperson of international acclaim from India to successfully crack the civil services examination. Prior to her injury setback, Kuhoo had attained a notable rank of 34 in the mixed doubles category and held the top position in India’s mixed doubles category at one point. Throughout her sporting career, she has accumulated numerous medals at both junior and senior levels, showcasing her exceptional talent and dedication to badminton.
Ashok Kumar shared that Kuhoo’s decision to pursue civil services was influenced by an injury she sustained, which redirected her focus towards this new endeavor.
Kuhoo Garg’s primary education was from St. Thomas College, Dehradun. After this, she completed her graduation from SRCC College, Delhi. Kuhoo Garg is also an international badminton player
