A pregnant woman administered HIV infected blood

DAINIK NATION BUREAU

A pregnant woman in Tamil Nadu is HIV positive after infected blood was pumped into her during a blood transfusion at a government hospital in Virudhunagar district, Chennai.
Three lab technicians of a government-run blood bank in the neighbouring town of Sivakasi have been suspended for the horrific lapse. Two years ago, they had allegedly failed to record or inform a blood donor that he was HIV positive.

The government has offered financial compensation and jobs for the woman and her husband but they want help for private treatment after the negligence.

The woman was administered blood from the same HIV-positive young man on December 3 after lab technicians at the government blood bank in Sivakasi found nothing wrong in the tests recently. But soon after that, he tested positive for HIV at a private laboratory when he went to get his blood tested to apply for a job abroad. By the time he alerted the government hospital, his blood had already been given to the pregnant woman.

Investigations revealed that the man tested positive for HIV and Hepatitis B two years ago after he donated his blood at a donation drive by an NGO. However, neither did the lab officials store his medical records nor did they inform him of the test results.ndtv
