Ordinance on SC promotion quota likely

Stepping up its Dalit outreach, the BJP-led NDA government will now push for reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in promotion in government jobs and may bring an ordinance.

Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, who has emerged as the key spokesperson on Dalit issues, said the government would move the apex court for the repeal of its directions, which, he added, had halted the reservation for these communities in promotion.

Paswan said the government was open to bringing an ordinance but will first move the apex court. The court, he added, had ruled in favour of reservation  in promotion but also introduced conditions which had led to non-implementation of guidelines.According to these, states and Centre have to verify backwardness and efficiency for staff to be benefited.
