Naini lake water levels drop down to 1.42 feet

For the last few years Naini lakes water level has remained a challenge for the district administration / governance. In the tourist town, due to falling water level of the lake, adverse impact of tourism is affecting the drinking water supply of the city. At the same time the lake has a bad effect on the aquatic organisms. This year too, the water level of the lake has come down to 1.42 feet due to lack of rain and snowfall in winter. Barring 2016 and 2017, this is the lowest level in the last four decades in March.

It is to be mentioned that in the past, the responsibility of Naini lake’s care was with PWD, which has now been handed over to the irrigation department. The department has records from 1977 till today, relating to Naini lake. Leaving the year 1980, water levels of the lake never reached zero since 1977 to 2000. Water level remained low in May and June in low rainfall in 1980. Apart from this, the minimum water level was 1.3 feet in May 1978 and the minimum was 1.9 feet in June 1985. The average water level in March is 6 to 10 feet, while in May and June it is 4 to 9 feet. Water level in the month of May 2000 had reached zero. Which later became normal again from the rain of during monsoon season.

The last two years have been the most difficult for the lake and if trends continue then this year seems no different. In the year 2016, the water level of the lake had reached zero on February 16, whereas in the year 2017 the water level of the lake reached zero on 12th February. Naini lake’s water level is 1.42 feet on March 25 this year.
