The Uttarakhand Governor Dr KK Paul said that a good doctor is one who, along with being familiar with the latest techniques, is also a good human being, sensitive to human values. He said that efforts must be made to bring about qualitative improvement in higher education in the state besides making use of alternative medicine, Yoga and Ayurveda in which Uttarakhand can make a great contribution. He expressed these views after awarding degrees to students at first convocation of HNB Uttarakhand Medical University at FRI, Dehradun on Thursday. During this time chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and minister of state for higher education Dr Dhan Singh Rawat were also present.
Congratulating the recipients of the degrees Dr Paul said that a convocation remains memorable in the life of every student. There had been great technical advancements in the field of medicine (like robotics, nano medicine and genetic engineering) and the new generation of doctors should ensure that along with learning these, they must remain sensitive to human values while treating patients.
Due to its difficult terrain, health facilities had not been yet much improved in the hill areas of the state. The status of the rate of mortality of newborns and also the gender ratio was not satisfactory. This had been indicated in the 2015-16 reports of the NITI Aayog. For the last one year, efforts had been made by the government and 584 doctors had been appointed. Against the 2700 vacancies of doctors, 2000 had now been filled. He said teams of doctors must be sent to remote areas of the state. A time table should be prepared for this. The Governor said that Uttarakhand had a great tradition of Yoga and Ayurveda and wellness tourism based on these must be promoted in the state.
Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said that this first convocation of the medical university was historic and a turning point in the lives of the students who were passing out. He said the state government had been making efforts to ensure better health facilities in the remote areas of the state. ICUs in district hospitals, recruitment of nurses and appointments of doctors were being ensured. He called upon the degree recipients to provide services in the state’s remote areas.
Dr Dhan Singh Rawat said that soon, the Chief Minister’s Fellowship Scheme would be started under which 100 students would be chosen from underprivileged families and would be supported in their research projects. He said soon, Uttarakhand would have its own traditional apparel for convocations.
A total of 234 students were awarded degrees. Present on the occasion were secretary Ravi Nath Rawat and VC of the university- Prof HS Dhami.
