Governor Dr KK Paul said today that the universities and colleges should have to create a better educational and academic environment where teachers would take on the roles of role models, guides and mentors for students. Refresher courses and workshops must be organized for faculty members. He expressed these views while addressing in two days long seminar organized at Doon University on “Qualitative and Quantitative Management of Higher Education”. The event has been organized by the department of higher education.
The smart campuses should be developed with smart classrooms, labs, digital libraries and the latest techniques in place. The infrastructure for higher education must be focusssed upon. Uttarakhand was known for its school education. There is now need to build higher education in the state on the same standards.
Vice Chancellors (VCs) and principals must encourage and inspire teachers to take on the role of guiding students by keeping up a communication with them beyond classrooms, inculcating our cultural values in them. He said teachers, in this internet era, must keep themselves up to date.
In many colleges ,there was a shortage of faculty and books Such institutions should, like the open university, utilize Massive Open Online Course (MOOC).the SWAYAM project of human resource ministry can also be of use. Courses are available free of cost with video lectures, study material and online discussions. He said that the CEC (Consortium for Educational Communication) of UGC can also be used through ICT.
Private educational institutions must not mislead students about affiliation. Students should be cleared about the status regarding affiliation at the time of admission.
Union minister of state for human resource development Dr Satyapal Singh said that it was a big challenge to make higher education truly “higher”. Traditional knowledge and wisdom must also be included so that our youth can get an education consisting of values, cultural heritage and also job-oriented.
Higher education minister Dr Dhan Singh Rawat said that principals had been appointed in all colleges. To ensure the faculties presence we have introduced Biometric attendance system. The academic calendar was being followed (180 days of study). Coordination was being done with the skill development department. An umbrella act will be made for universities.
