DAINIK NATION BUREAU

A meeting of top Congress leaders is going on at party president Sonia Gandhi’s 10 Janpath house in Delhi this morning.

They may declare their vice president Rahul Gandhi as next president of AICC by today. As we know that election commission has asked the congress to complete their organisational election by December 31 after giving it an extension. As we know that his mother Sonia Gandhi is leading the AICC for the last 17 years.

Sources said that  Rahul Gandhi may be elevated before the Gujarat assembly elections, where polling is schedule on December 9 and 14 and counting would be on December 18.

It was not necessary, said party leaders, for Sonia Gandhi, 70, to summon the 25-odd members of the Congress Working Committee, the party’s highest decision-making body, for a meeting to officially approve the schedule of the party election, but she insisted on it.

The Congress’ central election authority will notify the election dates decided upon today. It has suggested that aspirants for the post of party chief should apply latest by December 1, and elections, if needed, could be held on December 8, a day before the first phase of polling in Gujarat.

In October 2017, Sonia Gandhi had said that Rahul Gandhi, seen as waiting in the wings for years, would be elevated soon. Mrs Gandhi has been leding Congress as President since 1988, making her the longest-serving chief of the party. She has been unwell in recent years and has scaled back her public engagements, which has meant Rahul Gandhi being at the forefront.

He has been running congress as second in command since January 2013. Meanwhile the CWC has already announced it unanimously supports his elevation .
