Uttarakhand minister of state for women empowerment and child development, Rekha Arya, led a cycle rally to Haridwar to spread awareness on the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign on Sunday. She had earlier said that routes are diverted during kanwar yatra, muharram and gurpurav then why not for a cycle rally spreading awareness about saving the girl child.
However, she was criticised for holding a rally that would block the Doon-Haridwar national highway for more than four hours. Subsequently, she had agreed to cut down her entourage and limit it to just 15 cycles so that traffic is not inconvenienced.
Addressing the closing ceremony at Pantdeep Maidan in Haridwar, union minister for women and child development Maneka Gandhi said, “Our government is doing a good job in the field of gender equality. Sex ratio in 100 districts across the country, including Champawat, has become better in the past three years.”
Arya said that all possible steps are being taken to better the situation of girls and women in the state. Better sanitation and toilet facilities will be given at all Anganbadi centers across the state, she added.
