Kumaon commissioner reviews Irrigation department’s plan for Chorgalia Bypass Safety

DAINIK NATION BUREAU/HALDWANI

The Irrigation Department has submitted a ₹29.32 crore proposal for the safety of the Chorgalia bypass motorway, which was severely damaged by the Gaula river during recent disasters. Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat reviewed the proposed plan during a presentation at the Haldwani camp on Tuesday.

According to Sanjay Shukla, Chief Engineer of the Irrigation Department, the proposed safety plan has received state-level TAC approval at the departmental level. The plan involves protective work spanning 232 meters upstream of the bridge. Key components of the project include the construction of a retaining wall, 13 safety structures, and a spur in a 14.5-meter stretch. The spur will be strategically placed in the river to redirect water and debris toward the center, minimizing erosion near the motorway.

Additionally, two launching aprons will be constructed to enhance safety during high water flow, and a shear-key will be embedded as an anchor within the riverbed to prevent slippage of the protective structures. These measures aim to provide long-term protection for the vital roadway and surrounding infrastructure.

Executive Engineer Dinesh Singh Rawat and other officials were also present during the review meeting, where detailed discussions were held on the execution of the plan.
