Former Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam, claimed on Thursday that the party swiftly expelled him right after he submitted his resignation. In his twitter post Nirupam wrote, “It seems that the party decided to expel me immediately after receiving my resignation letter last night.” He added, “Good to see such promptness.” Later he addressed mediapersons and explained his situation.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had approved Nirupam’s expulsion for six years on Wednesday, citing complaints of indiscipline and making anti-party statements. This action came after Nirupam was removed from the list of star campaigners due to his comments against the INDIA bloc partner, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), regarding seat-sharing for the Lok Sabha election.
In his letter to Kharge, Nirupam stated, “I have finally decided to fulfill your much-awaited desire and hereby announce that I choose to resign from the primary membership of the All India Congress Committee.”
A former MP representing Mumbai North, Nirupam had criticized the state leadership of the Congress party after the Shiv Sena (UBT), led by Uddhav Thackeray, announced its candidates for four out of six Lok Sabha seats in Mumbai, including the Mumbai North West seat, which Nirupam had been eyeing.
He cautioned the Sena for taking an “extreme stand,” suggesting that the Congress party’s alliance with the Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena might prove to be “self-destructive.”
Nirupam had previously announced that he would make a decision on April 4 regarding whether he would remain in the Congress party or leave.
“Congress Party should not waste much energy and stationery for me. Instead, use it to save the party. Anyway, the party is going through a severe financial crisis. The period of one week that I had given has been completed today. Tomorrow I will take the decision myself,” he had stated.
