President Approves Uniform Civil Code, Uttarakhand becomes first state to implement UCC

The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill has got the assent of the President. After President assent UCC will be implemented in Uttarakhand. In his reaction Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that its credit goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Uttarakhand has become the first state in independent India to bring UCC law.

In Uttarakhand, which came into existence in the year 2000, the BJP created history by winning for the second consecutive time under the leadership of CM Pushkar Singh Dhami in the year 2022. According to his election announcement, CM Dhami was serious about UCC from the first day of government formation. He had approved the formation of the expert committee to draft the UCC in the first meeting of the cabinet immediately after the formation of the government in March 2022. After the report of the committee, the UCC Bill was passed in the Uttarakhand Assembly on 7 February 2024. The Bill was then sent to Governor. Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh had sent it to the President for his assent. A history was made as soon as the UCC got the assent of the President. This is a major achievement under the leadership of CM Dhami under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Advantages of UCC-
The UCC will have the same law applicable to all citizens irrespective of religion, caste or gender. There will be one law for every citizen in all subjects like marriage, divorce, adoption and division of property.

The implementation of the Uniform Civil Code will strengthen the concept of equality and social justice in the society. UCC will have the same law valid for all citizens. Personal laws that have been in place for a long time in different communities, which often lead to gender inequalities and discrimination, will cease to exist. Personal laws in India are often biased towards women. UCC will promote gender equality & women’s empowerment by ensuring equal rights and safety for all citizens.
