Despite incessant rain, Slum dwellers in large numbers along with Congress workers gathered at the Parade Ground from where they proceeded towards the Chief Minister’s residence. The police stopped the crowd from proceeding further at Hathibarkala, Dehradun, which also resulted in minor skirmishes.

In his address, state Congress president Pritam Singh asserted that the Congress would not accept anything less than giving the land ownership rights to the slum dwellers. He pointed out that the government should carry forward the process of regularisation of slums in accordance with the notification brought out during the previous Congress government in the state.

Leader of Opposition Indira Hridayesh accused the government of being insensitive towards the concerns of slum dewellers. Senior Congress vice-president Suryakant Dhasmana and former MLA Rajkumar along with others also addressed the gathering and pledged their support to the slum dewellers. The Congress leaders also announced that they would start the Jail Bharo Andolan over the same issue, shortly.

They protest over the issue of ownership rights to slum dwellers comes at a time when a few days ago, the Trivendra Singh Rawat cabient passed an ordinance to prevent eviction of slum dwellings in Dehradun.
