Special coaching camp begins at UPES

Secretary Dr. Bhupinder Kaur Aulakh inaugurated the 15th Edition of the annual ‘Project Abhilasha’ at UPES today.

In her inaugural address, Dr. Aulakh advised the participating students to let go of everything for the next two weeks and only focus on the opportunity provided to them by UPES. Dr. Aulakh applauded the University for discharging its social responsibilities in the sphere of education for the youth of Uttarakhand in a sustained manner over the past 15 years. RK Uniyal, Additional Director – Secondary Education, Govt. of Uttarakhand and Megh Singh, Member – Zila Panchayat attended the inaugural ceremony along with the UPES-CSR team.

Welcoming the Chief Guest, Arun Dhand, Director UPES shared the journey of UPES with them.  The current student demography received a loud applause from the audience he shared that out of the 29 states & 7 Union territories of the country, UPES has representation from 32 of these regions.

Presenting an overview on ‘Project Abhilasha’,  Manish Dubey, Asstt. Director, UPES disclosed that it was the first CSR project undertaken by UPES after its formation in the year 2003. The objective of this project is to enable the deserving meritorious students from the hinterland of Uttarakhand to succeed in various engineering entrance examinations by making them undergo a free of cost residential coaching camp in Dehradun where the students are specifically imparted high-end training in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics. Since the inception of the project the ‘Directorate of Education, Govt. of Uttarakhand’ has been assisting the university in identifying toppers & bright meritorious students from government run schools across the 13 districts of Uttarakhand.

Students who have passed Class 10th examinations with minimum 75% and are currently pursuing Class 12th with Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics subjects are eligible to apply for the camp. Based on the merit, the top 60 students are invited for the camp. The free residential training camps are being held every year since 2004 with over 700 students benefitting from them so far. ‘Abhilasha-2018’ is being organized in two phases in UPES campus where the first phase is being held from 15th to 30th of June wherein 57 students (21 girls & 36 boys) from 5 districts of Uttarakhand are attending the camp. Amongst the boys, Mohit Rawat from Guptkashi, Rudraprayag district tops the merit-list with 96% in class 10th while Nikhita, also from Guptkashi, Rudraprayag tops the merit-list with 94.6% amongst the girls. The second phase of the camp comprising of the same set of students will be held next year post completion of their 12th Board examinations. Apart from imparting extensive training in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics the participants are being engaged in physical activities through outdoor games like Football, Volleyball, Badminton, Table-tennis, Cricket etc.
