Cong defeats BJP by 2 lakh votes


Punjab Congress Chief Sunil Jakhar has won the Gurdaspur lok sabha bypoll by defeating opposition  BJP candidate Swaran Salaria by 1.93 lakh votes today. Congress celebrated it amidst sound of dhol and crackers while BJP leaders & their houses were deserted as if it was major set back for them in less than seven months. This result has shaken the confidence of the congress leader who had started deserting Congress ahead of assembly election in Himachal Pradesh assembly election due in November but boosted the confidence of the Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, who had managed to establish Congress led state government despite having PM Narendra Modi’s wave during assembly election this year.

Reacting on it, CM Singh has tweeted ” congratulation to sunil jakharji for his impressive win. it is victory for INC Punjab policies and development agenda.” Cricketer turned Politician Navjot Singh Sidhu said “ this is a beautiful gift of deepawali for our would be party party president Rahul Gandhi.”

Jakhar polled 4,99,752 votes and his rival Swaran Salaria got 3,065,33. Securing a mere 23,579 votes, the security deposit of AAP’s Maj Gen Suresh Khajuria (retd) was forfeited.

The Gurdaspur seat had become vacant following death of actor turned politician vinod Khanna in April this year. He had won the seat four consecutive terms on BJP ticket.
