Priority to create job for women: Gov

Uttarakhand Governor Dr KK Paul has stressed the need for skill development and proper training for women in order to enable them to get job opportunities in the hospitality and tourism industry.

He said it was important to know which type of training would be necessary, were there enough institutions for  hospitality management and can the help of Massive Open Online Courses(MOOC) be taken to train young girls for this industry. He expressed these views while addressing at the inauguration of the two-day international conference on Hospitality and Tourism (ICHT -2017) at Graphic Era university organized by the School of Hotel Management & Hospitality, Graphic Era University.

Theme of the conference  “Trends, issues and women in hospitality and tourism industry” was  extremely relevant and would  generate the high level of interest that  it deserved. The Governor said that workers must focus on acquiring skills to keep pace with technological development.

He said the imperative to have women in leadership roles was  now main stream, and many multinational companies and sectors have initiatives and objectives which aim to make this possible.” Today the situation  has changed. At the international level, the CEOs of Pepsi, IBM, G Motors, General Dynamics, Hewlett Packard, Lockherd Martin, Xerox, Oracle, to name a few are all women. In the financial institutions, the Chairpersons of Paytm, IMF, SBI, AXIS Bank, ICICI Bank are women.” He said the hospitality and tourism industry clearly has not yet succeeded in promoting women in significant numbers into leadership positions.

He said  it was  very appropriate that the conference was  being held this year in a state that has a vast variety of tourism possibilities which need to be explored fully.

“I sincerely hope that this meet will help our state find a better direction towards fulfilling its vast potential as a tourist destination. This would involve identifying tourism circuits – creating infrastructure in the area, and simultaneously training women with the necessary skills, and hopefully in the next few years they will make a substantial contribution to the GDP of the state.

The Governor said that along with the central theme of Women in tourism and hospitality, the other themes which the conference  aims to discuss were also very relevant to Uttarakhand .These include  Sustainable Tourism, Eco Tourism, Medical tourism, heritage tourism and tourism and hospitality education, health and wellness tourism, home stays  and IT in tourism and hospitality.
